The United States Department of Energy's Office of Fuels Development operated a program which focused on renewable fuels derived from algae. The Aquatic Species Program (ASP) researched biodiesel production from high-lipid algae strains grown in ponds, which utilized waste from CO2 coal fired power plants. The program operated successfully from 1978 to 1996. Highlights of the program are summarized in the following document: A Look Back at the U.S. Department of Energy's Aquatic Species Program. The full close-out report can be viewed here: A Look Back at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Aquatic Species Program: Biodiesel from Algae.

This study was completed to conduct a Life Cycle Assessment (LSA) to determine the environmental benefits of recycling CO2 from power plants for microalgae cultivation. Electricity production via coal firing versus coal / algae cofiring was a primary focus for comparison in the study.

The purpose of these documents is to guide research and development groups in the International Network of Biofixation of CO2  and Green House Gas Abatement with Microalgae (Biofixation Network), through microalgae. The documents are intended to aide in the commercial deployment of low-cost microalgae-based greenhouse gas abatement processes.
